The Week of the Puzzle

You would do well to keep yourself busy with much needed domestic chores. Get constructive work done, but learn to relax through meditation. Make lists of what needs to be done. Participate in group activities and fight a tendency to be cryptic and difficult. Share your unique visions rather than becoming obsessive with them. Concentrate on explaining yourself fully and avoid using highly technical language.

Myth and Mystery

Harry Potter: The Mystery of the Muggles

*WARNING: SPOILERS IN THIS ARTICLE! Look for the "WARNING!" before the spoiler so, if you are new to HP and haven't read all the books, they won't be spoiled for you.

Welcome to Article 2 of Myth and Mysteries, "Harry Potter: The Mystery of the Muggles". There is a lot of tension between muggles and magic folk in the HP series, most of which is culminated in the first chapter of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone (hereafter referred to as "PS"). When talking about "The Mystery of the Muggles", we will not be discussing Mr. Weasley's obsession with rubber ducks and plugs. Rather, we will be discussing the mystery behind the muggles who kept their eyes closed, and the worlds that remained separated for hundreds of years.
For those just getting into HP or for those who haven't read it yet at all, a "muggle" is a non-magical person. The Dursleys, who refer to themselves as "perfectly normal thank you very much" are muggles. Muggle parents, however, can still give birth to magical children, i.e. Hermione Granger, Lily Potter, etc...

Herbology with Laburnum Nightshade

BLOODROOT
Sanguinaria canadensis
Hardiness Zone: 3
Soil pH: acid
Height: 6-14 in.
Exposure: full sun to partial shade
Soil type: rich, moist, humusy soil
Flowers: very early spring

Discovered by American Indians, this herb derived its name from the red-orange sap that oozes out from a cut root or plucked leaf, like blood dripping from a wound.
Indians painted their bodies with Bloodroot sap to frighten away their enemies. Additionally, they dyed cloth with it and found medicinal uses as well. A tea made from the roots was drunk to treat sore throats, fevers, and rheumatism. The root was also chewed and the juice spat on burns to heal them. Indians also applied the sap to skin cancers to cure them.
Bloodroot was listed as an official botanical drug in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1820-1926. Its active ingredient is the alkaloid sanguinarine, which stimulates respiration, increases blood pressure, excites saliva flow, and increases intenstinal peristalsis. In small doses it acts as an expectorant, stimulant, and diaphoretic, clearing mucus from the respiratory tract. No cases of poisonings have been reported, but there have been instances of nausea, headaches, and vomitting. Any medical treatments with bloodroot should be done by a physician.
For dying, use 8 ounces of fresh chopped root with 4 1/4 gallons of water. Shades the color of the root can be stained into wool and silk. To dye fabric orange, use no mordant. A mordant of alum and cream of tartar will produce a rust color; use tin to create a reddish pink shade.
Because it is a wildflower, Bloodroot is most often found growing wild in the woods, but it can be cultivated. It best suits native gardens and rock gardens and can be grown among shrubs and beneath trees that do not cast heavy shade. It can be propagated from seeds, but rhizome division is easier. Leave 6-8 inches of space between plants and add decayed organic matter to the soil to make your bloodroot healthier.
